In recent years much controversy has arisen for the prostate specific antigen (PSA) test that screens for prostate cancer. Last August, the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) reported that they had finalized their decision that the prostate specific antigen (PSA) cancer screening test did more harm than good. The announcement sparked a prompt rebuttal from the American Urological Association (AUA). Many healthcare professionals, me included, feel that older men should have the test and if it comes back abnormal to fully consider the options with a physician knowledgeable about prostate disease. One such expert is Jay Cohen, M.D. I consulted with Dr. Cohen on the topic and he provided me with a wealth of information.

Dr. Cohen notes that in the last few years there has been a quantum leap in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. The problem is, many patients are unaware of these advances—and so too are their doctors.

In recent years, fast food has grown to be a staple in many American diets; however, the percentage of African Americans that are consuming fast food products far outnumbers the percentage of other races. “African Americans between the ages of 20 and 39 were shown to have the most fast food in their diet when compared with their Caucasian and Hispanic counterparts, as one-fifth of their calorie intake came from quick service restaurants”, reports Afro.com.

I grew up in a Mennonite community in Pennsylvania, surrounded by farmland and plenty of access to fresh, affordable, and healthy food. However, my father grew up in poverty in rural Mexico, where food was scarce and every day was a struggle for survival. While I could always eat plenty, I learned from an early age to have empathy for those who did not, as my father told stories of how his family dealt with poverty and my mother taught me to appreciate each meal and not dare waste one bite. From an early age, I knew that it was my calling to help those in need, but it would take some time before I would understand the inequalities of access to healthy foods and my desire to develop a solution to this problem.

D.C. exchange’s executive board voted to prevent insurers from charging higher premiums to smokers than to nonsmokers — meaning nonsmokers are likely to pay modestly higher rates than if smoking surcharges were permitted.
