Dear Reader:

More and more, churches are answering the call for greater health awareness in our communities. This is a wonderful thing. Where else do people go religiously for information and enlightenment?

One of our local churches is doing it up big time this weekend with a huge focus on empowering men by addressing their spiritual, physical and psychological health. As one of Milwaukee’s most respected institutions and while holding the distinction of being Wisconsin’s oldest African American church, St. Mark’s AME Church understands its responsibility and role in uplifting men in this community.

The church assumes its rightful place with three days of dedicated ministry to the men of Milwaukee.

On Friday, June 28, St. Mark’s opens its doors for 100 Men Praying, from 6-7:30 pm. The event features three dynamic speakers delivering timely messages: Julio Alvarado, Men Praying for Kingdom Impact; Sean Beverly, Men Praying for the Impartation of Spiritual Gifts; and Darryl Turner, Men Praying for Our Youth and Leadership in the Family.

Saturday, June 29, will bring a delightfully filling prayer breakfast in both the menu and the manifesto with Men Making a Difference. The Empowerment weekend winds up with a Sunday service, smartly named, “Dressed to Kill - 100 Men Casually Dressed”.

While the congregation enjoys a roster of more than 100 male members, Pastor Darryl Williams’ focus on reaching at least 100 men is centered on the notion that if just 100 men come together to pray, worship and break bread, only good can come from that.

Pastor Williams said, “June represents Father’s Day and Men’s Health Month. Celebrating men and fathers, bringing them together and healing the spirit of a man is critical to addressing the many ills that plague our community. Black men have every reason to give in and give up, but we don’t. This weekend of empowerment is to build our spiritual kingdom; build our relationships with our youth and to remind ourselves what we have to do as leaders in our families.”

The Men’s Empowerment Weekend is free and open to everyone. St. Mark’s AME Church is located at 1616 W Atkinson Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Get directions. For more information call 414-562-8030 or visit their website.
