May 29, 2015 - Inaugural Health & Wellness Summit
Brain Brawn & Body and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare
Present Inaugural Health and Wellness Summit
to Commemorate Men’s Health Month
Milwaukee, WI – (May 29, 2015) On Monday, June 1, 2015, Brain Brawn & Body, a website dedicated to men’s health, and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, will commemorate Men's Health Month with a news conference to announce a free health summit to take place on June 20.
The news conference will be held at 10 a.m. at Journey House, 2110 W. Scott Street. Photo opportunities and interviews will be available.
In addition to that announcement, Bevan K. Baker, Commissioner of Health of the City of Milwaukee, will highlight the state of health of Milwaukeeans, especially men of color.
Men's Health Month has been celebrated nationally since 1994. In 2013, Milwaukee became one of few cities in the nation to recognize the occasion. It came at the urging of Brain Brawn & Body founder, Eric Von.
"We saw the absolute necessity to raise awareness among men about their responsibility to take control of their own health," said Von.
"The statistics around men's health are daunting, particularly for men of color,” continued Von. “Many of the illnesses and diseases men suffer from are preventable and most are treatable if detected early. Knowledge is the key and raising awareness is one of our primary objectives. Through our website and now, this summit, men can get the knowledge they need so that they and their families can live healthier lives."
To augment the wealth of information found on the website, Brain Brawn & Body, in cooperation with Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, will present the Brain Brawn & Body Health & Wellness Summit on Saturday, June 20, at Journey House, 2110 W. Scott Street in the Clarke Square neighborhood.
This free event begins at 7:00 am and runs until 3:00 pm. The day will kick off with a wake up/warm up exercise session led by professional trainers.
There will be a variety of wellness workshops including:
- Physician led workshops and free wellness checks by Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare
- HIV/AIDS and sexual health by Black Health Coalition of Wisconsin
- Mental health awareness by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill
- Healthcare career options presented by MATC
- Responsible Living presented by the Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative
- Healthy cooking demonstrations
Eric Ford, Vice President - Wheaton Franciscan Medical Group Operations said, "For the third consecutive year, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare has played a key role in Raising Awareness about the importance of men’s health. This event is designed to continue to engage men and their loved ones in conversation and information sharing about the importance of routine check-ups and preventative health exams.”
One of the highlights of the Summit will be a noon time plenary session featuring an "Athletes in Action" panel presentation by former Green Bay Packers, Leroy Butler, George Koonce and Harry Sydney.
Another former Packer, Gilbert Brown, will conduct a football clinic for youth 13-18 years of age on the Journey House football field just two blocks from the main campus.
In addition, the popular "Brother to Brother" session and an "Ask the Experts" panel with medical professionals from Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare will round out the lunch hour.
All activities are free including an urban breakfast and lunch for those who pre-register. Click here to register for the health & wellness summit. The football clinic is open to the first 100 children who register. Gilbert Brown will give an anti-bullying talk to children following the clinic.
