Join Forces to Kickoff Men's Health Month and Present Wellness Weekend
June is Men's Health Month. For the fourth year, Brain Brawn & Body, the online site focused on the critical issues of health and wellness for African American men, will recognize the occasion with a June 1 news conference and on June 25 and 26, the first of its kind, Wellness Weekend.
Brain Brawn & Body will do this in cooperation with Milwaukee's Running Rebels organization and G.R.I.N.D., an acronym for Gee's Run In a New Direction.
The news conference will take place at Gee's Clippers 4327 W Fond Du Lac Avenue at 10:00 am onWednesday, June 1.
Joining the Wellness Weekend organizers for the news conference will be Mayor Tom Barrett; City of Milwaukee Health Commissioner Bevan Baker; Common Council President Ashanti Hamilton, Council member Russell Stamper and other common council members.
As the city tries to find solutions to the problems of crime and violence it currently suffers from, all of the participants agree that addressing the situation as a public health crisis is one of the most effective ways to achieve the crime and violence reduction outcomes everyone is seeking.
In addition to the aforementioned attendees, the city's new Office of Violence Prevention director, Reggie Moore will deliver a message about the goals of that office.
About Wellness Weekend
Wellness Weekend will feature a 5-mile walk/run on Saturday, June 25, kicking off at 7:30 am on the Washington High School football field. A comprehensive health summit will begin at 9:00 inside Washington High School. That event is co-sponsored by Milwaukee Health Services and will provide free health screenings and informative workshops.
Wellness Weekend continues on Sunday, June 26, with a charity basketball game sponsored by the Running Rebels. Teams will compete on behalf of four organizations that do research and raise awareness of some of the more prevalent health conditions plaguing Milwaukee's African American community; cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes and autism.
We're asking the Milwaukee community to come out and take advantage of this one-of-a-kind, free event.
